Weapons of Art Construction – DIY Ideas

Artists need special tools that are not readily available or affordable. Here are some DIY projects that we have made for our studio. One room is a painter’s studio, another is a woodshop, and the third one is our gallery.

Barter, salvage, re-purpose, and just asking may get you some of these tools and materials. We have a Habitat for Humanity Restore near us that is a trove for artists construction. Searching YouTube will give you more ideas for your own projects.

We have gathered these tools over time. Do Not be overwhelmed with what you do not have. Be thankful for what you do have, and see what else you can make do with until your ship sails in.

My own observation. There are tons of artists grants available. Do not be intimidated, they MUST distribute these funds. Apply, and learn from each application. Soon you will have your resume, slides of work, references and recent shows gathered in a file on your computer. If you do not have a computer, let that be one of the first grants that you write. Even if you never get the money from a grant, the writing of it stimulates your thinking and planning. Having lots of tools and tons of materials is useless unless you have ideas to make YOUR art. You may not change the world, but it is not for you to decide. It is for you to consistently do the work!
